Humanities
About the Department
The Humanities Department in Orchid Park Secondary School is made up of 3 units;
History, Geography and Social Studies.
-History is the study of the past that defines the present and shapes the future.
-Geography builds an understanding of the spatial interconnectedness and interdependence of people, economies and environments.
-Social Studies aims to develop citizens who are informed and concerned about social issues, and who will participate actively and constructively in the society.
The ultimate goal of studying the Humanities is for the Orchidian to develop into a cultured and objective person with a grounded understanding of the community, society, nation and the world so that he can interact well with others and function productively in any part of the world. In a fast-paced world, the study of the Humanities is essential as it reminds our students that a good mix of attitude and aptitude is the key to success in whatever they desire. As a department, we aim to develop this good mix of attitude and aptitude in our students through the content and the skills that they learn in the Humanities.
Department Pedagogy
The department adopts an Inquiry-based learning approach in the teaching and learning of Humanities. This is in line with the recommendation made by the Ministry of Education Curriculum Planning & Development Division (Humanities Branch). The Humanities Inquiry Approach, is underpinned by four elements of inquiry, where learning should be Question-Driven and Evidence-Based, and involves Reflection and Knowledge Construction. These elements are further exemplified through students’ learning as they undergo the four stages of the inquiry process, which are Sparking Curiosity, Gathering Data, Exercising Reasoning and Reflective Thinking.
Learning Experiences @ OPSS
We strive to provide a range of learning experiences to inculcate in students an interest in Humanities and an appreciation for the subjects. These include learning journeys, performance tasks, geographical investigations, historical investigations, Social Studies issue investigations as well as talks and workshops for our students.
