Mathematics & Principles of Accounts
About the Department
Our Mathematics and Principle of Accounts programmes seek to equip Orchidians with a good foundation in concepts and the necessary skills to solve problems with confidence and perseverance; as well as to instill in them an appreciation for the subjects.
The Mathematics department caters to the different learning abilities of our students by tailoring our programmes according to their needs. The teachers collaborate, share teaching ideas and resources with one another and explore new teaching strategies to better engage the students in their learning. Alternative assessment modes such as Learning Experiences and reasoning tasks are also used to enhance students’ learning to become active learners. At the same time, teachers practise many forms of Assessment for Learning to ensure mastery of the subject. To make the learning of Mathematics enjoyable and help students develop an appreciation for Mathematics, all students use the e-learning portals to improve their content and understanding of the subject and be more self-directed in their learning.
The Department has a monthly Newsletter that is aimed to discuss the relevance of Mathematics in everyday life. Students are able to link what they learn in class and appreciate the realistic applications of Mathematical concepts and skills, and on a grander scale, get excited about Mathematics and explore more about the subject themselves. Some of the editions of this newsletter are published by Orchidians.
We also organise a variety of enrichment programmes, such as Olympiad training and financial literacy courses. Higher-ability students are challenged through participation in International Mathematics competition organised by University of New South Wales and the Mathematics Olympiad organised by Singapore Mathematical Society. Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) students can also take part in the All Singapore Secondary Mathematics Competition For Normal Course Students.
The more capable students are given the opportunity to study the subject at a higher stream for all levels. We have customised structured remediation programmes for different streams, levels and classes to help students to achieve their academic potential. More information on our programmes can be found here.
The Principle of Accounts department provides students with a meaningful basic introduction to financial accounting and to develop an appreciation of the discipline of accounting. The programme is grounded in preparing, communicating and using financial information, and appreciating the need for ethical conduct. Through the study of accounting, Orchidians will acquire transferrable skills such as organising and analysing information for decision-making, and apply these skills in their daily lives. There is emphasis on the understanding and application of accounting knowledge to develop lifelong skills and values that will be of value in the increasingly complex business world. Principles of Accounts forms part of a broad-based education to equip students with strong fundamentals for future learning. It is offered as an elective subject at Secondary Three and examinable at the GCE O and N levels.
